Kath Menpes, 48, a born and bred Southlander, grew up inland in Heddon Bush and now lives in Orepuki, a small coastal settlement, with her husband, Paul, and their two children, Jamie, 15, and Lizzy, 13, on Paul’s family’s third-generation sheep farm. Three years ago, she joined PGG Wrightson as the store manager at Tuatapere. Five times a week, she channels her commitment to staying active into community fitness sessions for local women, where it’s not just muscles that get strengthened.

Oxtail Ragu With Casarecce

“Oxtail ragu was one of the first recipes I created for my blog and it’s still one of the most popular. It’s rich and comforting and delicious served with pasta such as casarecce or pappardelle. You could also have it with mashed potato, Parmesan polenta or as a pot pie topped with flaky pastry. I like to accompany this meal with a simple green salad to cut through the richness from the meat sauce.”

Amie Pont (Taranaki), 47, is deeply acquainted with the seasons of the Maniototo, traditionally known to Māori as Māniatoto, in Central Otago, having spent most of her life there. Not content merely to observe, she has contributed much to the fabric of the community over the years, from volunteering at the local Ranfurly radio station to establishing the local paper, Positively Māniatoto.
