The Old Way Sweet Scrolls

INGREDIENTS

1½ cups warm milk
3 teaspoons activated yeast
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup sugar
¼ cup melted butter or oil (or half/half)
1 egg
4 cups high-grade flour

METHOD

Place all the ingredients into a bread maker tin or into a large bowl.

Select the "dough" setting on the bread maker and press start! If you don't have a bread maker, then stir ingredients together, turn onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and silky before returning to a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and leave to rise in a warm spot until doubled in size.

When the bread has risen, turn out onto a floured bench and roll into a large rectangle, keeping about half an inch in thickness.

Choose whatever filling you like and spread onto the dough. Example: brush with melted butter, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Starting from a long side, roll up into a log and cut into slices. Preheat your oven to about 180C and leave them to rise on a tray while the oven is heating. Bake for 10-15 minutes.

Cool on a rack and then sprinkle with icing sugar. Or, if you want more of a sticky bun, brush with a mixture of icing sugar melted into a small amount of milk.

Best eaten right away!
